Cherished Gowns UK is a charity that provides the families of babies that are stillborn, miscarried or pass away shortly after birth with items of clothing that they are able to be dressed in for their funeral. We offer five sizes of Cherished Gowns, and each gown is accompanied by a hat, pair of booties, a blanket and a cloth nappy. These items are provided completely free of charge to parents, funeral directors, and we also supply every UK hospital with this service. All of the items that we provide are lovingly made by volunteers around the UK, from donated Wedding Dresses.

Somalia has long-standing political instability, armed conflict leading to a sectarian war and environmental stress. 3 million children have been left with no access to education. Retention and continuation are a challenge as institutional education capacity remains weak. The lack of learning materials in schools poses a severe threat as the ratio of materials to learners stands at 1:9.

Windle International considers good quality education as a key element in reducing the risk of extremism and establishing peace.  Since 2018, Windle International SOM has supported thousands of children, supplying educational materials, peer-counsellor training, professional development for teachers, mentorship, and re-usable facemasks and COVID-19 preventative information to learners and teachers.

There can be a number of conditions that need treating on an ongoing basis, once a person has had leprosy, and being able to provide the necessary medications will greatly help their recovery.

Sudan has a long-standing tradition of hosting refugees. For decades, it has kept its doors open to people fleeing war, hunger and hardship. Importantly, Sudan is one of the major hosting countries for refugees fleeing the deadly conflict in South Sudan. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the education gaps in the country, while the virus keeps spreading. Children are returning to school in unsafe conditions and without protection.

We believe that every child should have the capacity to access quality education safely, and reach their full potential.

Someone who has been treated for leprosy will wish to secure their future by working again, but are often unable to return to their previous physical labour. The gift of a small business means that they can generate their own income, providing for both themselves and their family. 

Distance Learning is a potentially powerful tool for achieving our commitment to gender equity. With many suitably qualified female candidates from East Africa unable to study outside of their home region for family or cultural reasons, this means that applications and selected candidates for traditional UK based scholarship programmes continue to be overwhelmingly male dominated. This in turn risks perpetuating and further entrenching the status quo where females are marginalised in education. Opportunities for Distance Learning offer the possibility of overcoming this barrier to inclusivity.

Our alumni reached positions ranging from senior Ministers to NGO leaders, development professionals, doctors, engineers and teachers amongst others. We believe that positive change is achieved, and peaceful societies are created, when the people who have been most affected by conflict are empowered to become change-makers in their communities. 

Uganda hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa (1.4 million), and 58% of them are children under 18 years old. The basic right to education of refugees is often denied. Living in a foreign country fleeing violence and persecution creates an extremely difficult situation for learning. Where education can continue, it is often of poor quality; in Uganda, this is affecting hundreds of thousands of children. The majority of schools do not have the infrastructure to accommodate overcrowded classrooms and the basic needs of children. Overcrowding is the hardest obstacle for teachers and students alike. This makes the situation for both teacher and learner almost impossible. Infrastructure needs to be adequate in order to make schools safer and more accessible, to all children affected by conflict. We aim to provide sufficient space, desk and learning materials to improve primary school children's learning outcomes and secure their academic future toward secondary level.

In Uganda, we have been recognized Best International Education Humanitarian NGO in the country, in both 2019 and 2020.

For as little as the price of a takeaway coffee, £3 could provide a freshly cooked, hot meal for someone homeless or struggling with other vulnerabilities.

These meals are all cooked fresh on the day and served in the safe and warm space that is our homeless cafe.
